Are Complications Related to Knee Replacement Surgery Serious?
As you might expect, just like with any type of surgical procedure, there can be complications when you undergo knee replacement surgery. In some cases these complications are mild and pass within a few days following surgery. In other cases, though, complications are quite serious and have even led to patients filing lawsuits against the manufacturers of knee replacement devices.
What should be your main concerns if you undergo knee replacement surgery?
The usual post-surgery issues can be expected after joint replacement surgery. There will be mild to moderate pain, stiffness, and discomfort. In most cases, a few days of physical therapy and prescription or OTC pain medication is enough to make things bearable. There will also be bruising and swelling that will diminish in the days following the procedure. The important thing with these side effects is that your recovery continues to move forward and there are no relapses.
Serious Complications are Possible
In addition to the usual post-operative issues most patients face, you will also want to watch for signs of more serious complications. Bruising can be an indication of a blood clot. Though blood clots can be minor issues and dissolve on their own, when a clot occurs in the leg it can detach and move to the lung, which can result in pulmonary embolism. This is very serious and could put your life at risk, so be sure to speak with your doctor about clotting issues prior to your surgery.
Knee Replacement Device Failure
You will also want to be aware of problems that can occur with the joint replacement device itself. If you hear unusual noises or experience pain after you have healed from the surgery, contact your doctor immediately. These issues can occur many years after surgery, and in some cases, joint replacement devices fail and additional surgeries are needed to repair the problems.
There is also a risk your body will react to components in the device. Anything that seems unusual or causes you discomfort should be immediately brought to your doctor’s attention.
