Are Knee Replacements Safer than Other Replacement Surgeries?
In general, joint replacement surgeries are similar in risk regardless of the joint being replaced. However, due to what occurs after surgery and how many knee replacement surgeries are performed, there appears to be a greater incidence of problems following knee replacement surgery.
High Number of Surgical Procedures
The rate of knee replacement surgeries has increased a great deal in the last decade or two. Part of this is because of the aging population. As Baby Boomers – who make up a huge part of the population – age, more and more of them will undergo knee replacement. This does not mean there are a greater percentage of them that need it compared to other generations, it just means there are more in their generation overall.
Since so many more surgeries are happening, the number of complications that can occur increases. Obviously, if more people are doing something there is a greater opportunity for complications.
In addition to the higher number of people undergoing knee replacement procedures, there is also the factor of what the joint is used for and how it is at a greater risk for damage. Hip and knee joint replacement procedures are the most common. This is because the hip and knee joints are exposed to the greatest wear and tear. They are used nearly every time a person moves and they are subjected to a person’s full body weight.
This does not stop once the joint is replaced. The same things that caused a need for joint replacement in the first place are going to affect the joint once it is no longer natural. If you are overweight or you participate in a great deal of activity, this is going to wear away the joint faster than if you are healthy and inactive (something that is nearly impossible!).
How Often is Knee Replacement Surgery Performed?
So are knee replacement operations safer than other joint replacement procedures? You also need to consider the frequency with which the procedure is performed. The more practice surgeons have with the procedure the better they will be and the safer the patient will be. It is relatively easy these days to find a surgeon with a great deal of experience replacing knee joints.
Should the safety of knee replacement over other joint replacement procedures be a factor when determining if the procedure is right for you?
Not necessarily. You need to evaluate your own case and determine if surgery is your best option. Despite the procedure being relatively safe and there being many knee replacement operations each day, there is still risk and you need to base your decision on that risk.
