How to Recover from Knee Replacement Surgery
Knee replacement surgery can be the answer to your prayers, but like any surgical solution, things will get worse before they get better. How you handle the recovery period following knee replacement surgery can play a role in the overall success of the procedure. What do you need to do to ensure the best and fastest recovery possible?
Follow Doctor’s Immediate Instructions
The first and most important thing you can do to achieve a successful recovery following knee surgery is to listen to your doctor’s instructions. He or she will provide prescription medication for treating pain and to prevent infections, and will give you aftercare instructions for healing your surgical wound. You will also be given guidance for when to resume activities. Ideally, there will be someone to assist you with your recovery, since you will lack mobility for some time after your surgical procedure.
Participate in Physical Therapy
Despite doctor’s warnings about what you cannot do in the days and weeks following knee replacement surgery, you will be expected to participate in one important activity: physical therapy. Much of it might seem impossible or extreme, considering you will struggle to walk in the initial days after the procedure, but working with a trained physical therapist ensures you will be pushed to the appropriate limit and not be injured from your work.
Physical therapy can be painful, but it is absolutely necessary. In order to fully recover from your experience, you must be willing and able to participate in the exercises provided to you, both during your physical therapy visits and at home on your own time.
Alert Your Doctor to Any Issues
Finally, you will be asked to alert your doctor if anything seems unusual. You can expect there to be some discomfort immediately after the procedure, and stiffness and pain could continue for several days. Your doctor and physical therapist will request updates even if everything seems to be moving along as planned because the speed with which you heal guides the plans for recovery. This is especially true with physical therapy.
Unfortunately, not all discomfort associated with recovery is normal. There are instances in which knee replacement devices fail and patients are forced to undergo revision surgery. Many of these events take place long after the initial recovery period has passed, but it is still important to alert your doctor to anything that seems unusual. It is possible for your body to react poorly to the implant device and if this occurs, you must seek medical attention as soon as possible.
