How to Tell Your Knee Replacement Surgery Failed

If you have undergone knee replacement surgery or you are considering the procedure, you might have come across information on device failure.

In order to enjoy a successful replacement procedure and restore your physical ability to what it once was, it is important to understand all of the signs of a failed device. If any of the following occurs after you have undergone knee replacement surgery, notify your doctor immediately.

Pain

There will be some level of pain in the days and weeks following the procedure, especially when you are pushing your limits in physical therapy. However, the pain should gradually decrease. Should you experience a relapse and feel as if your pain level is worsening instead of improving, or your pain returns after months or years without any pain, you need to take action.

Swelling

The same is true with swelling. Swelling will gradually decrease over time, but if you notice a flare up in the knee area or you experience bruising, you will want to notify your doctor as soon as possible.

Immobility

One of the most important benefits of undergoing knee replacement surgery is the restored mobility you experience. Activities that were nearly impossible are again an option once you have a new joint. Unfortunately, if you experience joint device failure, you will notice a sudden dip in mobility. You will feel stiff and uncomfortable, and as time passes, mobility will be reduced. If you are noticing any problems with moving as you believe you should be able to move, alert your doctor.

Noises

Perhaps you are experiencing no pain and no detectable reduction in mobility, but every time you move your knee you hear a clicking or squeaking sound.
Something is “Just Not Right”

Are none of the issues above present, but something just seems off to you? Trust your gut. Your body is trying to give you a message and it is better to follow through on it than to wait until it is too late. Your body could be reacting to the metal components in the device or you might just be experiencing a reaction to something that occurred during the operation. If your complaints are dismissed when you report them to your doctor, seek a second opinion.
