How Will My Doctor Evaluate the Results of My Knee Replacement Surgery?

If you have recently had knee replacement surgery or you are considering the procedure to help with pain and immobility, it is important to understand the recovery process. Your doctor will need to evaluate your progress in order to determine whether or not the results were positive. Unfortunately, some patients undergoing knee replacement procedures find they are in more pain than before they had the new knee put in place. How will your doctor evaluate the results of your procedure?

Pain

First and foremost, your doctor will consider the level of pain you experience as you heal from knee replacement surgery. Since pain is a subjective experience, he or she will attempt to evaluate pain based on your description, as well as what you are able to do. It is imperative you be honest with your doctor concerning your pain. If you try to hide the pain to appear tough, it can mask a serious problem with the knee replacement device. And if you overreact to pain in an attempt to get sympathy, it will skew the assessment and make it impossible to design an appropriate aftercare plan. Not having appropriate aftercare can lead to long-term damage.

Mobility

Another important assessment tool is mobility. You should have a lot more of it after your knee replacement surgery, but it will return gradually. Working with your physical therapist is the best way to test your limits concerning mobility and help your doctor determine how well the surgery went. Restored mobility is one of the best indications of how positive a knee replacement surgery was.

Strength

Like mobility, strength returns gradually and needs to be tested in increments. Be honest with your doctor and PT about how strong you feel. Try not to be afraid of your new knee. Some people have a psychological issues with putting weight on a knee replacement device, but remember, they are intended to mimic the strength of a natural human knee. Worst case scenario, if you push too far you will feel a twinge of pain that tells you to pull back. Any failure will come with some warning beforehand.

Activities

Finally, your doctor will assess your improved quality of life. Even if everything is not yet perfect in your recovery, if you are enjoying life more and able to participate in approved activities, your knee replacement surgery will be ruled a success.
