What are the Side Effects of Knee Replacement Surgery?

As with all surgical procedures, knee replacement therapy can trigger a variety of side effects. For many who opt to have surgery to replace a joint the side effects are worth regaining their mobility and strength. However, some of the side effects can be serious, so it is important to understand your risk and know what you need to do to keep side effects under control.

Aftercare is Important

First and foremost, make sure you follow your doctor’s instructions after the procedure. The instructions given are intended to reduce pain, speed recovery, and keep you as comfortable as possible. Fill any prescriptions and take the medication as directed. It is also important to follow through on physical therapy, both at the therapist’s office and at home, and to do what you can to remain otherwise healthy. Eat well, get plenty of rest, and keep stress under control.

Despite how committed you are to your recovery after knee replacement surgery, you should expect a few mild to moderate side effects. There will be bruising at the site of the surgery and it will feel tender and sore. Chances are your knee will be stiff, especially when you awaken and as you begin each physical therapy session. As the days pass you should begin to notice these symptoms diminishing. Try not to let the discomfort interfere with your commitment to physical therapy.

Serious Side Effects are Possible

In addition to the mild side effects, you also need to be aware of and alert your doctor if any serious side effects occur. Some drainage from the surgical site is normal, but if it seems excessive or increases several days after surgery, it could be a sign of an infection.

If you notice any odd bruising or swelling, it could be a sign of a blood clot. Your doctor will want to monitor clotting closely because a clot in the knee can pull away and move to the lungs, causing pulmonary embolism. This can be serious, and in many cases can even be fatal.

It is also important to be aware of the symptoms related to the loosening of your joint replacement device. Over time, if you hear strange noises or experience pain long after your body adjusts to the replacement device, you should alert your doctor immediately.
